rom Fairy Tail ep 40. Natsu’s goal is the destruction of the Heaven Tower, more than fight Jellal. Because without the tower Jellal’s plan will fail.

Jellal uses one of his strongest attack to kill Natsu with one shot and avoiding to damage the Tower. Erza runs in front of Natsu, thinking that Jellal can’t kill her because her is the sacrifice; instead Jellal launches his attack. 

However Simon who has betrayed Jellal, protects Erza dying at her place.
